3M Diamond Grade sheeting for safety on the roads

3M Diamond Grade retroreflective sheeting
With its diamond-shaped lattice, 3M Diamond Grade retroreflective sheeting lives up to its name.

Road safety is strongly linked to visibility. In the United States, the accident rate is three times higher at night than it is during the day. As a result, for safety and legal reasons, increasing numbers of states and municipalities are using retroreflective sheeting to make their signage more visible for drivers.

In the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Section 2A.07 dictates that "regulatory, warning, and guide signs and object markers shall be retroreflective or illuminated to show the same shape and similar color by both day and night." Illumination can be quite costly and unreliable, so most sign buyers and vendors opt for retroreflection, with 3M Diamond Grade often the preferred sheeting.

In the world of retroreflective sheeting, 3M is the clear frontrunner in terms of both market presence and product quality. Nearly all effective street signage is covered in retroreflective sheeting, much of which is Diamond Grade reflective sheeting produced by 3M. Some rail cars are now even covered in Diamond Grade markings for increased visibility.

3M's Diamond Grade sheeting is the pinnacle of retroreflective sheeting due to its unique ability to illuminate a sign without a significant amount of light. As a result, such sheeting makes signs much more readable. Regardless of a vehicle's distance from a sign, if it has 3M Diamond Grade sheeting, the vehicle's lights will make it readable from nearly any distance. This is beneficial to everyone, but can be especially helpful to the elderly and people with slow reaction times or poor vision.

It's also important to note that there may be some instances when Diamond Grade sheeting may be inappropriate. Diamond Grade sheeting is known for reflecting the maximum amount of light, even with a relatively weak light source. This means that the light could reflect back at the driver and obscure the substance of the sign if the lighting is too intense. Such circumstances are unusual, but they do occur from time to time.

3M Diamond Grade retro reflective sheeting illuminates signs well, and many more places are using it on their street signs to improve the safety of their roads. If you're putting up new street signs, retroreflective sheeting is a legal and safety must, so using Diamond Grade sheeting is a good investment.
